The Pilot House:  this is what happened when A. Quincy Jones, Whitney R. Smith and Edgardo Contini were contemplating their now famous Mutual Housing Association and they wanted a place to test drive the engineering, innovation & inspiration that would deconstruct standard ways of thinking about space.  They wanted to create open, energetic hillside homes where great design meets practicality, privacy & bold ideas that would become timeless for generations to come. The Pilot House is long & linear and perfectly sited to make the most of its steep lot---patios abound, the wide angle view fills every living space and a pitch perfect hidden oasis shelters the secluded pool at one end of the deep lot and the ultimate office/studio retreat anchors the other. Angled windows, original signature materials & details, every inch captures the spirit and integrity of their vision.

The Mutual Housing Association, now the Crestwood Hills Association, is a historic modern housing community designed by Jones and Smith adjacent to Brentwood. Of the 500 MHA homes originally proposed, only 160 were eventually built.

The Brentwood-Bel Air Fire of 1961 destroyed  somewhere between 45-60 of the houses.  Only 31 of the original houses in the community now known as Crestwood Hills. Architect Cory Buckner has been extensively involved in the restoration of a number of MHA homes, and in 2002 published the authoritative book: A. Quincy Jones (Phaidon Press).
