Today a resident of walkable Los Feliz can stroll to an acclaimed Berkeley import on Hollywood Boulevard, drive eight minutes to the most argued-about Montreal-style bagel in America, or line up for a New York legend that finally crossed the country to Sunset Boulevard.
What follows is the local's accounting: who does what best, and where to go depending on the bagel you were raised on.
Courage Bagels, Virgil Village
The line is real and so is the reason. At 777 N Virgil Ave, Courage ferments its sourdough for 72 hours before boiling, and the result is a thin, glassy, blistered crust over a dense chew that has half the city convinced and the other half arguing. Order open-faced, the tomato with salted butter, or the cold-smoked salmon with roe, and accept that this is not a New York bagel and was never trying to be. Still the standard-bearer, and still on every national best-of list.
Maury's, Silver Lake
Maury's is small-batch, naturally leavened, boiled and baked daily at 2829 Bellevue Ave on the Silver Lake and Echo Park line, and the most smoked-fish-serious operation on this list. The whitefish salad and the trout are the moves. Mornings only, closing at 1pm on weekdays and 2pm on weekends, which is exactly the kind of constraint that keeps a bagel honest. Go early.
Belle's Bagels, Delicatessen and Bar, Highland Park
The biggest news on this list. Belle's outgrew its old Figueroa storefront and reopened at 5022 York Blvd as a full all-day Jewish deli with a cocktail bar: the double-fermented bagels that built the following, now with pastrami, matzo ball soup, and evening hours that run late most nights. It is the only place here where a bagel morning can become a martini evening, and the neighborhood is better for it.
Boichik Bagels, Los Feliz
The hometown entry. Boichik, the Bay Area's most celebrated bagel maker, opened its first Southern California shop at 4655 Hollywood Blvd in early 2025, and Los Feliz finally has a proper bagel counter of its own. These are dense, sturdy, classic-style bagels baked in-house, with rotating varieties, salt and pepper, pumpernickel-caraway, and a solid build-your-own sandwich program. Purists debate it against the New York benchmarks; the neighborhood mostly just walks over and eats.

Saint-Raf Bagels, Cypress Park
The sleeper. At 1206 Cypress Ave, inside 1802 Roasters, Saint-Raf hand-rolls New York-style bagels with a crisp exterior and fluffy interior, plus the most creative seasonal flavors on the Eastside; the ube bagel with kaya cream cheese is the one people drive for. An LA Times best-of pick, still under most people's radar, which is precisely the moment to go.
Yeastie Boys Bagels, Los Feliz & Silver Lake
Truck culture, done right. Yeastie Boys parks at 2070 Hillhurst Ave in Los Feliz and 3922 Sunset Blvd in Silver Lake, with a third stop in Highland Park, serving New York-style bagels and gloriously excessive sandwiches; the Reubenstein has a fan club. The brick-and-mortar shops are all off-Eastside, so out here it pays to check their Instagram for the day's hours before heading over.
Brooklyn Bagel Bakery, Westlake edge
Sixty-five years of boiled-then-baked New York tradition from Brooklyn Bagel Bakery at 2223 Beverly Blvd, the western frontier of any honest Eastside map. This is the un-precious counterweight to everything above: no fermentation manifesto, no line strategy, just a proper bagel from a bakery that was doing this decades before the Eastside noticed. Open 6am to 2pm daily.
What a bagel line says about a neighborhood
Food operators read neighborhoods the way appraisers wish they could. When Boichik picks Hollywood Boulevard for its first Southern California shop and H&H chooses Sunset in Echo Park, that is institutional money betting on Eastside foot traffic and staying power, the same fundamentals that hold home values here.
